The Long Grass of Inter Campus Uganda

“The grass is so high!” When Mrs Josephine, the headmistress of St Joseph’s Primary School in Nagalama, tells us how things are going during this period of the virus, this is the image that strikes us most: the school field where hundreds of children normally train and play, now that the children are confined at home for quarantine and no longer trample it running and playing ball, has become covered in long grass!

But from June 1st, according to government directives, schools will reopen, and with all possible safety measures in place (the school we collaborate with is adjacent to the Hospital created by CUAMM – Doctors with Africa), the children will be able to train again. Obviously, our instructions have been to exercise maximum caution, even if the country has not been significantly affected by the epidemic, but we are sure that our educators/coaches, who already normally provide health information for the prevention of the most endemic diseases (malaria, AIDS, waterborne diseases), will know how to best manage the reopening.

Almost three hundred boys and girls can’t wait to return to school and – of course – to play football again with the Inter Campus groups. This is confirmed by the local technical manager, Michael, with whom we maintain contact via WhatsApp. The network connection isn’t exceptional, but we are always happy to see him and, through him, to be able to communicate both information and study materials for him and all the teachers, who continue their distance learning. Once again, we feel compelled to thank MP Filtri and Giovanni Pasotto, CEO of the Lombard company, a leader in the production of industrial filters, for the support that has allowed us to carry out this project for many years now, giving us the certainty that we will always be able to bring these children to have fun and grow by playing on that field, even and especially when the epidemic ends and the grass will once again be flattened by their runs with the ball at their feet. “I am enthusiastic,” says Pasotto, “about the activities that we have been developing for a long time with Inter Campus in Uganda, hoping one day to be able to visit the Nagalama school and these wonderful children together.”
