A huge space on the outskirts of the city. An institution that cares for about a hundred orphaned or parentally supervised adolescent boys and girls. A long journey that began in 1966 thanks to Father Berta, on a mission in Bolivia under the mandate of Don Bepo Vavassori, founder of the San Vincenzo Patronage in Cochabamba, which has since welcomed children and young people in situations of severe social and family disadvantage.

The Bergamo institution is committed to offering a welcoming living space for minors, structured according to a family model, capable of ensuring them the emotional support essential for growth and for taking control of their own lives.

A world apart, different from ours, where everyone smiles, where there is collaboration, inhabited by many children who need affection. They come up to you, ask your name, are curious, want to know everything about you, and quickly grow fond of you.

They live within a village where everyone has a role: some wash dishes, some do laundry, some clean the house, some tend the vegetable garden, and some do sewing; each of them participates in the home. The entire community is managed and organized by director Fulvio Diploma, always committed to managing the Ciudad as best as possible, aided by a group of nuns who are also always busy helping the various educators. There are about ten houses, each with an educator who acts as a mother for about a hundred children.

One must enter that small world to truly understand it.

Accompanied by Esterel, the institute’s coordinator, to visit one of the family homes, we listen to the story of the 7 children who live there. All siblings, and this is precisely the goal: to try to keep them together. There were 10, but three have moved to another center for adolescents where they are preparing for autonomous reintegration into society.

On the Andes mountain range, on the outskirts of the city, lies the village built 60 years ago by Father Berta. Inside, there is a church, schools (kindergarten/primary/secondary and a vocational school), workshops, vegetable gardens, covered basketball courts, and a large dirt soccer field that our local partner, Fundación Casari, has made almost flat, limiting its slope. Some mother-educators, one for each housing unit, confirm that school comes first. An opinion we have always shared! Inter Campus is an incentive for study and for a whole series of psycho-physical benefits.

At the conclusion of this week of field training sessions, led by our Coach Gabriele Raspelli and the group of local coaches, Fundación Casari, our historic local partner in Bolivia, together with the educator-mothers and the parents of the children from the local community neighborhoods, organized a big celebration for everyone.

Many children ask, “You’ll come back, right? When will you come back?”
