MONZA – Despite the unprecedented challenges the world has had to face up to over the last 18 months, the period has also thrown up some wonderful good-news stories which we are delighted to be able to share here. One of these is the Sport Therapy project, which Inter Campus has been collaborating with since 2018 by organising at least three football sessions every month for children from the Maria Letizia Verga centre. Let’s hear from Roberto Redaelli, who leads the project.

“When the whole world ground to a halt in spring 2020, the Sport Therapy/Inter Campus project was able to continue working because sporting initiatives aimed at children suffering from leucaemia were deemed to be crucial to their health – a form of treatment. We doubled – almost tripled – our football activities in the Maria Letizia Verga centre during this incredibly challenging time. Despite the difficulties associated with working inside a hospital, Inter Campus did everything they could and were able to make a real difference to the children involved. For them, that hour of football was absolutely crucial, not just for their physical rehabilitation but also because it gave them an opportunity to cut loose during a really stressful time, when they had to be really alert in everything they did, being classed as vulnerable individuals.

Sadly, leucaemia continues to affect many young people in the rooms at the Maria Letizia Verga centre. Every day, there are children there receiving treatment. Some of them have been dealing with the disease for some time, while others are at the start of the process. One part of their treatment is Sport Therapy, which runs four days a week and offers training sessions for patients from two years old to 20. And just as Sport Therapy never stops, Inter Campus is always there to support us, with at least three Inter Campus sessions running every month – in true Inter Campus style, with a ball at their feet!”
