Viewed as a means of development for the entire community and as a tool for education and social cohesion, sport in Cuba holds an absolutely central dimension within its culture. The importance it holds for Cuban society, also as a form of social redemption, is therefore primary, especially in these recent years of economic crisis due to the pandemic and lack of tourism. A crisis that we were able to observe recently, during the mission that just concluded, and which gives further meaning to the work that Inter Campus has been carrying out on the Caribbean island for years.
All of this has transformed into increased motivation and energy displayed by the children during training sessions held in Havana, in the peripheral neighborhood of “Las Jaimanitas” and with the core group of Plaza de la Revolución, and those in Holguin, the main city of the eponymous eastern province, and into an intense and active participation of local coaches during the many hours of direct training (especially with the Holguin groups).
Important work has also been carried out at an institutional level with the consolidation of the relationship with the Cuban Football Association and with the Hijas de la Misericordia congregation, represented by Sister Onoria, both project partners and aware, perhaps now more than ever, of the importance of interpreting sport as a tool in the educational process.
